Frequently asked questions

Questions people ask before getting in touch.

If something you need to know is not here, ask at the consultation, or send a short note.

Getting started

How do I book a first appointment?

After our free consultation and given that you wish to move forward with the services, Cognizant Psychotherapy will send you an onboarding package that includes terms of service, informed consent, and other important information such as payment information. After you have read and signed the onboarding package you can use my Booking link to book an appointment according to your availability.

What happens in a consultation?

A short, low-pressure conversation: what is going on for you, what you are hoping for, how I work, and whether I am the right person. You can ask anything, including about my training, my supervision and my scope of practice. There is no obligation to continue, and it is fine to be unsure.

Do I need to know what is wrong before I come?

No. "Something is off and I cannot name it" is a perfectly good starting point. Working out what is actually happening is part of the therapy, and not a prerequisite for it.

Credentials, supervision & scope

What are your qualifications?

I hold a Master of Science in Rehabilitation Counseling on the Clinical Mental Health Counseling track from Rutgers University, and I am a National Certified Counselor (NCC) through the National Board for Certified Counselors. I also hold an MBA and a BSc in Accounting & Finance from Athens University of Economics and Business. My advanced training includes EMDR, CBT, REBT, solution-focused therapy, motivational interviewing, family systems therapy, trauma-informed care, couples therapy, group counseling and career counseling. These are described under My Tools.

What is EMDR?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a therapeutic approach designed to help people process distressing experiences, memories, and emotions that may continue to affect how they feel and respond in the present. Using guided eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation, EMDR can help the brain reprocess these experiences so they feel less overwhelming and have less influence on current thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. EMDR is commonly used for trauma and PTSD, and may also be helpful for anxiety, difficult life experiences, and other sources of emotional distress.

What does "Limited Permit" mean?

In New York, a Mental Health Counselor Limited Permit authorizes a qualified counselor who has completed their graduate degree to practice under qualified supervision, while completing the supervised experience required for full licensure. Practically, it means my clinical work is reviewed regularly by an experienced and qualified supervisor. Mental Health Counseling services are provided through Cognizant Psychotherapy, which is a NYSED-authorized practice. Many clients find that second clinical perspective reassuring.

Is this website your practice?

No. This is an informational professional website. It is not itself a psychotherapy practice, and no counselor-client relationship is created by using it. Mental Health Counseling services are provided through Cognizant Psychotherapy, which is a NYSED-authorized practice.

What do you not treat?

I do not provide medication management, emergency or crisis services, inpatient or intensive outpatient care, or court-ordered evaluations and documentation. If you need a level of care beyond my scope, I will tell you and help you find it.

How is my confidentiality protected?

Clinical confidentiality is governed by law, professional ethics and the policies of the practice setting, which will give you its own notice of privacy practices. There are narrow legal limits, including risk of serious harm to yourself or others and suspected abuse of a child or vulnerable adult. Clinical work is also discussed in qualified supervision. Please do not send confidential health information through this website.

Are the business awards listed on your site clinical credentials?

No. The recognitions listed elsewhere on this site are earlier business and entrepreneurship awards, not clinical credentials, and they do not qualify or expand my scope of practice as a mental health counselor. the organizations listed are not affiliated with my counseling practice and their inclusion is not an endorsement of it

Sessions, fees & logistics

Where do sessions take place, and do you offer telehealth?

Sessions are by secure video only; I do not currently offer in-person appointments. I see clients who are physically located in New York, through Cognizant Psychotherapy, a NYSED-authorized practice setting, and under qualified supervision. You will need a private space and a reliable connection for the session.

What are your fees, and do you take insurance?

Sessions are $130 for individual therapy and $180 for couples. Sliding-scale places are available based on eligibility, so please ask if the standard fee is a barrier. Cognizant Psychotherapy does not accept insurance directly, but provides a monthly superbill you can submit to your insurer for reimbursement; what you get back depends on your plan. Fees and billing may change, so please confirm them when you book. If you are uninsured or are not using insurance to pay for your care, you have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate of the expected cost of your services under the federal No Surprises Act. My psychotherapy services are provided through Cognizant Psychotherapy, which is a NYSED-authorized practice setting, which establishes fees and handles billing. The practice will provide your Good Faith Estimate when required or upon request.

How often would we meet, and for how long?

Sessions are typically fifty minutes, usually weekly at the start, because momentum and building the therapeutic relationship matter most early on. Duration depends on what you are working on; we review it together rather than assuming it continues indefinitely. Couples counseling typically runs between ten and twelve sessions.

Do you work in Greek?

Yes. I work in English and Greek, and you are welcome to move between them in session. Some things are easier to say in the language you first felt them in.

I am in crisis right now. What should I do?

Please do not use this website. It is not monitored and cannot respond to emergencies. Call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), call 911, or go to your nearest emergency room. For perinatal mental health support, the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline is 1-833-852-6262, available 24/7.
